Darrin Brooker... my friend.

Dear Darrin,

I send you my condolences and trust you will be feeling better in a few short months. So close and yet so far. What a shame. I am with you in your pain, brother.

Sincerely,

Paul

  1. I don't know if Darrin is a Buffalonian, but even if he is he is, he is not the only one dreadfully disappointed. Let me be to first to say that in lieu of a Toronto Stanley Cup (which isn't likely within the next while)Buffalo deserves it most - much more than Edmonton - so call me unpatriotic. But now I have to choose between a region that has never seen snow, and Edmonton?! The Lord said we would suffer tribulation.

  2. Yes, it has been a rough day. Trying to understand how our 3 best defensemen can have such freakish injuries in the same series is hard to come to grips with. And to think, with the boys from the Rochester Americans farm team minding the blue line, we still got to within 20 mins. of the finals.

The finals. Ever so elusive for many a team. I must, however, confess, I am impressed by one thing: the caring and concern of all my dear Leaf friends, who, much to my surprise, actually did know that hockey is still being played in the month of June.

I took great solace in your compassionate post on my behalf. A true brother indeed. Or at least until I glanced slightly to the right to see your picture; and I couldn't help but think that you were, ever so quietly, laughing at me.

A fan since 1970, a fan for life,
    Darrin

  3. As a resident of Cary, NC (near Raleigh), I must protest -- we do see snow down here, usually 2-3 times every winter.

As a Canadian transplant living in the South and long-suffering Leaf supporter, I can say that I am enjoying very much the Hurricanes' journey to the Finals. The series against the Sabres must have been one of the most entertaining I have witnessed in recent years. It was a hard-fought series with each team showing a lot of character and poise. The Sabres have nothing to be ashamed about -- they have a great team that will come back next year.

Now, onwards to defeat the Oilers!!!

  4. As a lifetime Leaf fan, I'm somewhat able to commiserate with downcast Darrin. However, my sympathy is tempered by memories of Running Well's post when the Leafs were officially eliminated from post-season play. While he professed no joy at Toronto's demise, the "springtime" joke, the "exclamation mark" and the customized tombstone seemed to indicate a little delight, if not scorn. As I wallowed in my annual sorrow, I tried to apply Proverbs 27:6 to the situation and failed to find solace. Ohhh, the wounds of a friend, how deeply they cut.

Darrin, my friend, I'm afraid the Sabres have reached the pinnacle of their success, the apex has been realized, it's all downhill from here. As you plummet, please remember to wave as the Leafs rocket upward past you, soaring to heights under the leadership of Mr. Maurice, to altitudes unseen since the early 90s.

How shall I sign off this post? Shall I sink to the same pitiful, melodramatic "a fan since 1970, a fan for life". Oh no, away with such emetic pathos!!

    Go Leafs Go !!

    :-)

  5. Dear Odious,
I want to commend you for the kindness and graciousness that you have shown here to our dear brother, Darrin.

You are right. His boastful tirades at the end of the regular season were painful and tearing to Leaf fans like us. But you have taken the high road in response to the obvious demise of his stinking herd. For this Herodias, I commend you, and wish that all bloggers would take a lesson from your humble consolations to the losers from New York. You have proven that although we will soon experience world hockey domination, we Leaf fans still know how to treat pathetic little guys with shallow visions of grandeur. I am glad you have led us to treat such a bedraggled and begrudging bunch of Buffalonians with the respect they deserve.

    Thank you.

A million times - thank you.

  6. It's too bad really, I was looking forward to seeing the Oilers kick some Sabres heiny. I really wanted to lord it over Darrin!

  7. Ruminator -
I shall have to ask you to demonstrate a much more respectable attitude in your posts or else I will be forced to freeze you out of this conversation. Learn from the Odious.
Anyway, Buffalo do not have heiny's. They have rumps. (Maybe I should check that with the Cowboy, though!)

  8. All I can say (for the past 27 years) is "GO OILERS GO!"

I must admit, I really wanted the Oilers to face Buffalo - it's more of a hockey town than Raleigh!

  9. Now, now, Terry... You are going to offend the Beachlover! (Who, by the way, I think we should all gang up on since he so easily abandoned his patriotic loyalties and jumped ship... I am sure all because of lower ticket prices! I bet you can buy game 7 tickets at the local 7-11. "Would you like an ice-hockey ticket with your fill up or this official NASCAR tie?" "Y'all crazy - gimme the tie!" Raleigh ain't no Toronto!)

  10. We only get snow once a winter here - November to April.
