there is no need to denounce people who are not living the holy life. The New
Testament seems to me to be sorry for them. There is no need to denounce
Christians who are not doing their utmost to live the Christian life, because,
poor things, they are suffering enough as it is. They are missing the greatest
things the gospel has to give. The New Testament regards as pathetic these
people who claim that they desire the blessings of the gospel and yet are not
doing the one thing that is essential to receiving them.”
