It is hard to find good children’s Bible story books, but never more so than in the recounting of David’s slaying of Goliath. There are all kinds of books that make much of David’s smooth stones and accurate sling... but I am waiting to see the kid’s book that depicts David standing over Goliath and using the giant’s sword to decapitate him.
Better yet, where is the story Bible that shows David bloodied from battle marching in to Jerusalem with that same giant’s noggin in hand?!
The greater David didn’t just knock our Enemy unconscious... He destroys the Destroyer. Let the children know!
Amen!
ReplyDeleteActually, we had a kid's pop-up picture book of the story of David and Goliath that did include David chopping off Goliath's head.
But, before your imagination gets away from you, there was no accompanying pop-up to that description. Words only. :-)
Oh - LOVE that picture. But what's a mom to do when she has 3 young daughters who just this morning, on the drive back from church through a lovely rural area full of calves grazing peacefully, and their daddy makes his usual cheery comment about "what do the cows say, girls? 'Sizzle, sizzle!" and they begin to wail about how we can't eat the baby animals!!!!!" I seriously struggle with how to gently introduce my daughters to the more violent concepts of the O.T., even as I want to teach them to do violence to the sin in their hearts (and am tempted to do violence to their backsides when they don't!!!)
