"Although a majority of Americans say religion is very important to them, nearly three-quarters of them say they believe that many faiths besides their own can lead to salvation, according to a survey by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life.
The report, titled U.S. Religious Landscape Survey, reveals a broad trend toward tolerance and an ability among many Americans to hold beliefs that might contradict the doctrines of their professed faiths.
For example, 70 percent of Americans affiliated with a religion or denomination said they agreed that “many religions can lead to eternal life,” including majorities among Protestants and Catholics. Among evangelical Christians, 57 percent agreed with the statement, and among Catholics, 79 percent did.
Among minority faiths, more than 80 percent of Jews, Hindus and Buddhists agreed with the statement, and more than half of Muslims did."
There is more to be concerned about here than the not surprising opinions of those surveyed. It is the belief that tolerance means acceptance. I believe that adherents of other religions should have every right and freedom to hold to and propogate their beliefs. I also believe they are wrong and I want them to fail in their attempts to convince people. I would be considered intolerant according to this article simply for saying their beliefs will not garner them eternal life. That should be more frightening to believers than hearing that people believe other religions are OK.
ReplyDeleteIf they had asked only me, the results of the survey would have shown that Americans are unanimous in their conviction that Christianity is the only religion that leads to salvation.
ReplyDeleteAnd that is what I like about you, derifter!
ReplyDeleteThis is definitely the fruits of modern evangelism that has produced so many false converts. This is what you get when you tell people to simply "invite Jesus into your heart" so they can experience life enhancement.
